English – About me and this project

A blog about my research in Danish naval history: I am currently writing a Ph.D. project about the social history of the Danish Navy in the eighteenth century. My aim is to find out how the navy was organized and how it worked. First and foremost I am interested in the men. What was life like for the thousands of sailors, craftsmen, soldiers, and officers? What were their carreer opportunities? What was their education and background? These and many other questions need to be answered. Other important aspects that I research relate to sickness and health, crime and punishment, and organization and recruitment in general. My focus is on the Danish Navy, but there are obvious comparative aspects, and I will give a comparison between the Danish navy and the Swedish and British navies of the day. Most of my source material is original protocols, journals, etc. held at the Danish National Library (Rigsarkivet) and the Danish Royal Library (Det Kgl. Bibliotek).

My CV: Cand.mag. (MA) in history and archaeology, graduated from Copenhagen University 2001. Employed as a curator at the Royal Danish Naval Museum since 2001. I have published a number of articles about Danish naval history.

When I am not researching I am planning an update of the permanen exhibitions at the Royal Danish Naval Museum. That project will be finished by 2010. I am also a teacher of naval history at the Royal Danish Naval Academy.

I am based in Nexø on the Baltic island of Bornholm where I work from home a couple of days a week. I have a wonderful little boy with my sweet wife Diana, and come October 2008 we’re expecting yet another child. As a rule I am in Copenhagen every Monday-Wednesday.
